As the Day Ends
“Keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life” (Jude 21, KJV).
At the end of a demanding day, even prayer can begin to feel like another responsibility waiting to be completed. We may arrive before God with tired minds, unfinished concerns, and little emotional energy. Yet Jude’s invitation directs us toward the love of God. We do not have to manufacture a stirring feeling before we can approach Him. We can come honestly, trusting His mercy and allowing His Word to redirect our attention. In the surrounding verses, Jude connects remaining in God’s love with growing in faith, praying in the Holy Spirit, and awaiting Christ’s mercy. Love gives our evening prayer its setting and our hope its direction.
A. W. Tozer’s supplied reflection reminds us that worship involves loving God. That love includes affection, but it also expresses itself through willing devotion. Some evenings, gratitude flows easily. On others, love takes the quiet form of entrusting a worry to God, acknowledging a failure, or choosing obedience despite weariness. You can offer God a tired heart that still desires Him. The strength of your emotions does not measure the whole of your devotion. Tonight, remember a particular kindness you received, bring one unresolved concern before the Lord, and let your prayer become an honest response to His faithful care. You may have unfinished work when you lie down, but you can rest while trusting the One whose mercy sustains you.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the love that has sustained me throughout this day, including the moments when I scarcely noticed Your kindness. Forgive me for treating time with You as something to hurry through. I bring You my fatigue, my unfinished responsibilities, and the concerns I keep rehearsing. Help me receive Your care with gratitude and respond with willing obedience. Where I have been impatient or self-absorbed, teach me to make things right. As I prepare for sleep, settle my heart in the assurance that I remain known and loved by You.
Jesus the Son, thank You for the mercy through which I can approach God with confidence. You know my weaknesses and the places where my intentions have exceeded my faithfulness. Help me love You through the choices I make, the words I speak, and the way I treat others. I entrust to You what I cannot resolve tonight. Where shame keeps drawing my attention inward, turn my eyes toward Your grace. Give me courage to follow You tomorrow and humility to receive Your correction. Let the hope of eternal life strengthen my trust in Your faithful presence.
Holy Spirit, guide my prayer when weariness makes words difficult. Bring Scripture to mind and help me remain attentive to the truth I have received. Cultivate love within me that grows through gratitude, patience, and faithful action. Reveal any resentment I need to surrender and any kindness I have withheld. Help me release the desire to control every outcome. As this evening becomes quiet, steady my thoughts and prepare me for restorative rest. Continue Your work in the parts of my life that need healing and growth, and make me willing to follow Your guidance.
Thought for the Evening: Before you sleep, name one reason you love the Lord. Thank Him specifically, then place one unfinished concern into His care.
