As the Day Begins
“Yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead.” —Romans 6:13, KJV
We can begin the morning asking God to guide us while quietly hoping He will approve the direction we have already chosen. Surrender becomes difficult when His Word touches something we want to keep: a resentment, a habit, or the right to have the final say. In the supplied reflection, A. W. Tozer presses this uncomfortable question: Are we willing to let Christ govern the life we ask Him to bless?
Paul’s appeal in Romans 6:13 rests on the believer’s new life in Christ. We offer ourselves to God because His grace has brought us from death to life. The Greek verb paristēmi means to present or place at someone’s disposal. Paul calls us to place our bodies and actions at God’s service.
Picture a clenched hand slowly opening. That movement expresses the spiritual posture this morning invites. Surrender makes us available to the God who has already shown us mercy. Our words, attention, decisions, and abilities become places where His grace bears fruit. Today’s obedience can begin with one honest willingness: “Lord, this belongs to You.”
Heavenly Father, I thank You for meeting me with mercy before I have accomplished anything today. You know how easily I defend my preferences and protect my little territory. Help me recognize the places where I resist Your loving authority. I place my plans, responsibilities, and relationships before You. Give me courage to receive correction without making excuses, and patience when Your guidance interrupts my expectations. Teach me to trust Your wisdom enough to obey what You have already made clear.
Jesus the Son, You gave Yourself for me and rose again so that I might walk in newness of life. Forgive me when I welcome Your comfort but hesitate before Your commands. Let Your faithful obedience shape my choices today. When I feel the urge to speak harshly, withdraw selfishly, or return to an old habit, remind me that I belong to You. Help me offer my hands for service, my voice for encouragement, and my time for the people You place within my reach.
Holy Spirit, make me attentive to the truth of Scripture as this day unfolds. Show me where fear disguises itself as caution and pride presents itself as certainty. Strengthen my willingness to yield before resistance becomes a settled habit. When obedience feels uncomfortable, help me remain faithful. Fill my heart with love that makes service willing and repentance sincere. Bring to mind the next faithful step, and help me take it with gratitude for the life I have received in Christ.
Thought for the Day
Romans 6:13 connects Christian surrender with the new life God gives through Jesus Christ. Before your first demanding conversation or decision, identify one thing you have been holding tightly. Offer it to God in prayer, then practice that surrender through a concrete act of obedience: listen patiently, release resentment, speak truthfully, or serve willingly.
