Love Beyond the People We Find Easy

As the Day Begins

“Let brotherly love continue.” Hebrews 13:1, KJV.

Some people make kindness feel natural. Others test our patience before the conversation has properly begun. We may feel guilty about that difference, wondering whether irritation means our faith has failed. A. W. Tozer’s supplied reflection offers a helpful distinction: loving someone in Christ does not require enjoying every aspect of that person’s behavior. Hebrews 13:1 calls us to keep loving, even when affection comes slowly.

Brotherly love treats fellow believers as members of God’s household. It asks us to care about their welfare, protect their dignity, and resist the temptation to reduce them to their most difficult traits. We can recognize troubling behavior and still seek the person’s good. Love may include an honest conversation or a necessary boundary.

As this day begins, think of someone you find difficult. You do not need to manufacture warm feelings. Ask God to help you offer one sincere expression of care: a patient answer, a prayer, or practical help. Christian love grows as we practice faithfulness toward the people God places before us.

Heavenly Father, thank You for welcoming me into Your family through grace. I confess that I sometimes measure people by how comfortable they make me feel. Help me remember that they carry concerns and burdens I may never see. Give me patience without dishonesty and kindness without resentment. When someone irritates me today, slow my response and help me consider what would serve that person’s good. Teach me to reflect Your generous care. Amen.

Jesus the Son, You have loved me through my weaknesses and corrected me without abandoning me. Help me follow Your example when another person’s habits or words trouble me. Guard my heart against contempt, and keep me from using truth as an excuse for harshness. Give me courage to speak honestly when needed and humility to recognize my own faults. Let my conduct today make Your love visible through respect, mercy, and steady faithfulness. Amen.

Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts before they become words. Help me notice when frustration is turning into judgment or when wounded pride is shaping my response. Remind me of the grace I have received and strengthen me to extend it. Show me when to listen, when to speak, and when to step back peacefully. Form in me a love that continues beyond convenience, and help me obey even while my feelings are catching up. Amen.

Thought for the Day

Let brotherly love continue through one deliberate act today. Choose someone you find difficult and offer care without expecting immediate warmth in return. You might listen without interrupting, refuse to repeat an unkind story, or pray sincerely for that person’s needs. Love becomes visible when another person’s welfare matters to us.
