Give Your Heart Something Worth Keeping

As the Day Ends

“Keep my words and treasure up my commandments with you.”
Proverbs 7:1, ESV

As the day settles, consider what has occupied your heart. Perhaps you have carried responsibilities, replayed a conversation, or absorbed more troubling information than you realized. Proverbs 7 invites us to give God’s instruction a treasured place within that crowded inner life. The chapter warns against seductive invitations that lead toward destruction. Before describing those dangers, it calls the listener to keep wisdom close—to protect it like the apple of the eye and write it upon the heart. What we cherish influences what we notice, desire, and eventually choose.

God’s Word helps form the heart from which our decisions grow. Reading Scripture is therefore more than collecting information. We receive its truth, reflect upon its meaning, and practice what it teaches. A remembered verse can help us recognize temptation, steady an anxious thought, or interrupt a harsh response. Scripture memory does not make us immune to failure, but it gives us truth to recall when pressure arrives. Tonight, you need not master a chapter before resting. Read a short passage slowly. Notice one instruction or promise, and carry it into prayer. Ask the Lord to make His wisdom welcome within you, shaping both your desires and tomorrow’s choices. Let the day end with something nourishing for your soul.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for speaking through Your Word and giving me wisdom for the life before me. As I look back over today, help me recognize what has nourished my heart and what has unsettled it. Forgive me for treating Your instruction casually while giving lesser things my attention. Teach me to treasure what You say. I entrust tonight’s unfinished concerns to Your care. Let gratitude quiet my restlessness, and help me receive the rest You provide with a willing and trusting heart.

Jesus the Son, You met temptation with faithful obedience and the truth of Scripture. Help me follow Your example when my desires pull me toward an unwise choice. I bring You the moments when I was impatient, careless, or unwilling to listen today. Forgive me and lead me toward whatever repair is needed. Thank You that I can seek Your mercy honestly. As I prepare for sleep, remind me of Your faithful love. May Your teaching become familiar within me and guide my steps tomorrow.

Holy Spirit, help me understand and remember the Scripture I read tonight. Bring its truth to mind when I need encouragement, correction, or strength. Show me the habits that leave my heart vulnerable, and give me willingness to change them. Keep my reading from becoming a hurried duty. Teach me to receive God’s Word with attention and love. As the house grows quiet, settle my thoughts upon what is true and good. Prepare me to wake with a renewed desire to walk faithfully with the Lord.

Thought for the Evening

Read Proverbs 7:1–3 slowly. Choose one short phrase to remember, repeat it prayerfully, and consider one way to practice it tomorrow. Let treasured truth accompany you into rest.
