As the Day Ends
“First take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take out the speck that is in your brother’s eye.” Luke 6:42, ESV.
As the day ends, it can be easier to remember someone else’s faults than to examine our own responses. We replay an impatient remark, a disappointing decision, or an offense we believe deserves correction. Jesus interrupts that habit with a startling picture: someone attempting delicate work on another person’s eye while a wooden beam obstructs their own vision. The exaggeration exposes the danger of unexamined judgment. We may sincerely want to help, yet resentment, pride, or defensiveness can distort what we see. Before addressing another person’s need, we must allow the Lord to address what is interfering with our own understanding.
Jesus leaves room for helping our neighbor, but He gives that help an order: first examine yourself, then approach the other person with clearer vision. Tonight, consider one interaction that has remained unsettled in your thoughts. Was your response truthful and kind? Did you listen, or were you preparing your defense? Honest examination need not become endless self-accusation. Bring what you recognize before God, receive His mercy, and identify any repair you should make. Humility helps us offer care without placing ourselves above the person who needs it. We can rest tonight while remaining willing to apologize, listen again, or speak more gently tomorrow.
Heavenly Father, I place this day before You, including the conversations I keep replaying. Thank You for seeing me truthfully and loving me faithfully. Forgive me for the times I have examined another person’s faults while protecting my own. Help me recognize resentment, pride, and impatience without making excuses for them. Give me courage to acknowledge the harm I have caused and wisdom to make amends. Let Your mercy quiet my heart tonight, and prepare me to meet others with greater understanding tomorrow.
Jesus the Son, Your words expose what obstructs my vision, and Your grace gives me hope for change. Forgive me for speaking as though I stand above those who struggle. Teach me to remember my own need for forgiveness whenever I offer correction. Where a difficult conversation is necessary, help me speak truth with tenderness and listen with patience. Where I have judged hastily, lead me to reconsider. As I rest, keep me near You, trusting Your love to shape both my intentions and my conduct.
Holy Spirit, search my heart and bring to mind what needs honest attention. Help me distinguish a faithful conviction from wounded pride. Guard me against dwelling upon another person’s failure while avoiding my responsibility. Give me the self-control to pause before speaking and the humility to receive correction myself. Show me one practical way to repair a strained relationship or offer more thoughtful care. Release me from rehearsing accusations through the night. Let tomorrow’s words grow from a heart increasingly shaped by Your patience, gentleness, and peace.
Thought for the Evening: Before sleep, confess one attitude that has clouded your judgment. Ask God to help you approach tomorrow’s conversations with clearer eyes and a gentler heart.
