Before You Say Another Word

As the Day Begins

“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned.” —Luke 6:37

Before the day gets busy, consider how much influence your words will have. A passing comment can help someone feel understood or leave them feeling dismissed. Jesus’ command in Luke 6:37 addresses the condemning spirit that so easily enters our conversations. He calls us to approach others with the mercy we continually need ourselves.

We can recognize harmful behavior, speak truthfully, and exercise discernment while acknowledging how little we know about another person’s heart. We may see the action without knowing the struggle behind it. Knowing part of someone’s story does not qualify us to pronounce judgment on the whole person. Even a prayer request can become an opportunity to repeat something we should have kept private.

This morning, let God examine your speech before you examine someone else’s failures. Ask whether your words are true, necessary, and loving. Then remember that Jesus offers forgiveness for the careless comments you regret and strength for the conversations still ahead. Through His grace, you can become someone who speaks honestly, listens patiently, and leaves room for another person to grow.

Heavenly Father, I begin this morning grateful that You know everything about me and still invite me into Your presence. You see the motives I hide, the fears I carry, and the weaknesses I would rather overlook. Forgive me for treating others as though their failures define them while asking You to be patient with mine. Help me remember that every person I meet stands before You as someone worthy of truthful, compassionate attention. Give me humility when I am tempted to assume I understand everything.

Jesus the Son, thank You for meeting sinners with truth and mercy. I confess that I sometimes use another person’s mistakes to make myself feel better. Cleanse my heart of that pride, and forgive the words that have damaged someone’s reputation. When a difficult conversation comes today, help me speak with courage and tenderness. Teach me to address what needs attention without humiliating the person before me. Let the grace I have received from You become visible in the way I answer, correct, and encourage.

Holy Spirit, watch over my thoughts and guide my tongue today. Help me notice the moment when concern becomes gossip or discernment becomes contempt. Slow my response when irritation rises, and give me patience to listen before speaking. Bring Scripture to mind when I am tempted to repeat an unkind story. Shape my inward attitude as well as my outward words, so that kindness comes from a heart being renewed by You.

Thought for the Day: Before repeating a story about someone, pause and ask whether sharing it will help that person or merely expose them. If the concern requires action, speak to someone who can responsibly help. If it does not, turn the impulse to talk into a prayer.

Read Luke 6:36–37 and carry the Father’s call to mercy into your conversations today.
