Enough for Today

As the Day Begins

“Give us each day our daily bread.” — Luke 11:3

Some mornings, tomorrow’s concerns arrive before today’s breakfast. We wonder whether our resources, energy, or patience will last. Jesus meets that anxiety with a prayer for daily bread. In Luke 11:3, He teaches us to bring ordinary needs before our Heavenly Father. Food, shelter, strength, and help belong within our conversation with God. We do not have to make our needs sound more spiritual before asking Him to care for us.

Israel learned this dependence through manna in the wilderness. God supplied bread each morning, with a double portion before the Sabbath so the people could rest. His provision taught them to follow His instructions and trust His faithfulness (Exodus 16). Their security rested in the One who fed them. Our circumstances differ, but the invitation remains: receive today’s gifts with gratitude and entrust tomorrow to God. Planning responsibly can coexist with trusting deeply. Even when provision comes through work, another person’s generosity, or the courage to request assistance, we can recognize our Father’s care. Today, let your first request be simple: “Lord, help me receive what You provide and faithfully use what You place in my hands.”

Heavenly Father, I bring You the needs that have followed me into this morning. You know the responsibilities before me and the worries I struggle to release. Thank You for the ways You have sustained me, including gifts I overlooked because they seemed ordinary. Please provide the food, strength, wisdom, and help I need today. Teach me to work faithfully without imagining that everything depends upon me. Give me humility to receive assistance and generosity to share Your provision with someone else.

Jesus the Son, You taught Your disciples to ask for daily bread, and I am grateful that my practical needs matter to You. Forgive me when fear makes me grasp tightly or overlook another person’s hunger. Shape my desires so that I can distinguish what I need from everything I want. Help me follow You through today’s responsibilities with a willing heart. When the future feels uncertain, remind me that I can bring my anxiety to You and take the next faithful step.

Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts when worry begins rehearsing tomorrow’s troubles. Help me recognize the Father’s provision and respond with gratitude. Give me discernment to plan wisely, patience when answers take time, and courage to ask for help when I need it. Make me attentive to those whose needs I might otherwise miss. Let my words encourage someone, my hands serve someone, and my resources bless someone. Throughout this day, teach me to depend upon God with honesty, confidence, and an open heart.

Thought for the Day: Name one practical need before God this morning. Take the responsible step available to you, then notice one provision for which you can give thanks. Remember that Jesus taught us to pray for “our” bread; consider how you might help meet another person’s need today.
