When God Writes on the Heart

As the Day Begins

“Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will establish a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt.” —Hebrews 8:8–9, ESV

Some mornings, I know what obedience requires before I feel willing to offer it. I recognize the need to forgive, speak gently, or surrender a worry, yet my heart resists. Hebrews 8 speaks directly into that struggle. Quoting Jeremiah 31, it announces God’s promise of a new covenant. Through Jesus, our Great High Priest, God provides forgiveness and brings His people into a relationship in which His instruction reaches their inward lives. He promises, “I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts” (Hebrews 8:10, ESV).

The Hebrew word lev, “heart,” in Jeremiah’s promise includes our thinking, desires, and will. God’s transforming work reaches the place where our decisions begin. Like sunlight gradually warming a cold room, the Holy Spirit works through God’s Word to reshape our affections and strengthen obedience. Growth may involve struggle, confession, and repeated surrender. Yet I can begin today with confidence: Jesus has offered Himself for my sins, and I may ask His Spirit to help me love what God commands. The Lord who calls me to faithfulness also supplies grace for the next faithful step.

Heavenly Father, I thank You for meeting my weakness with the mercy of Your covenant. You know the distance between what I confess and what I desire. Write Your truth into my thoughts and affections today. Help me receive correction without defensiveness and approach Your Word with an open heart. When I feel discouraged by slow growth, remind me of Your faithfulness. Teach me to welcome Your instruction as the loving guidance of my Father.

Jesus the Son, I thank You for giving Yourself for me and serving as my Great High Priest. Because of Your sacrifice, I can approach God with confidence and bring my failures into the light. Forgive my attempts to appear faithful while protecting desires that resist You. Make Your goodness precious to me. As I face today’s responsibilities, help me follow Your example of patient love, willing surrender, and trust in the Father.

Holy Spirit, renew my willingness to obey. Bring Scripture to mind when resentment rises, anxiety presses, or temptation offers an easier path. Help me recognize the choices through which faith becomes action. Give me courage to apologize, wisdom to remain quiet, and compassion to notice someone’s need. Keep drawing my attention to Jesus. As I depend upon You today, form in me a heart that increasingly delights in the ways of God.

Thought for the Day: Before facing a difficult conversation or responsibility, pause and ask, “Lord, what needs to change within me?” Read Hebrews 8:10, name one area of resistance, and ask for grace to take a specific obedient step. A gentle answer, an honest confession, or a freely offered kindness can become today’s expression of God’s work in your heart.
