You Can Rest in His Welcome

As the Day Ends

“Let the children come to me; do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God.” —Mark 10:14, ESV

As evening settles around us, I wonder how much of today we are still trying to justify. Perhaps a conversation went poorly, an unfinished responsibility keeps returning to mind, or we feel disappointed with ourselves. Then we encounter Jesus welcoming children whom His disciples had tried to turn away. Mark tells us that He took them into His arms and blessed them. They brought no accomplishments that could establish their importance. They came as children, dependent upon the care of others, and Jesus received them gladly. His welcome invites us to approach Him honestly, with the needs we cannot meet ourselves.

Receiving God’s kingdom like a child does not mean avoiding responsibility or abandoning thoughtful faith. It means acknowledging our dependence and receiving what we cannot provide. Tonight, that may be the most difficult surrender before us. We are accustomed to managing, helping, and holding things together. Yet we also need mercy, reassurance, and rest. Whatever our age or experience, we remain dependent upon the Lord. His embrace of these children helps us recognize the kindness of His heart. We can bring Him our unfinished day without first making it look successful. We can confess what needs forgiveness, give thanks for what was good, and entrust tomorrow to His care.

Father, I come before You with gratitude for Your patient care. You know what this day required and where I struggled. Forgive the moments when pride kept me from receiving help or acknowledging my limitations. Help me release the need to account for every outcome before I sleep. I entrust the people I love to You, including those whose difficulties I cannot resolve. Give me a quiet heart, willing to receive Your provision and ready to follow Your guidance when morning comes again.

Lord Jesus, thank You for welcoming the children and revealing Your tender concern for those others overlooked. Help me receive Your kingdom with humble trust. I bring You my failures, weariness, and unanswered questions. Where I have sinned, lead me into honest repentance. Where I have carried burdens beyond my responsibility, teach me to surrender them. Let the remembrance of Your cross steady my confidence in Your mercy. Tonight, I rest in the love You have shown and the promises You have given.

Holy Spirit, quiet the thoughts that keep rehearsing today’s disappointments. Bring the truth of Scripture gently to mind and help me receive it with faith. Show me anything I should confess, any forgiveness I need to extend, and any concern I should place in the Father’s hands. Guard me from confusing exhaustion with spiritual failure. Renew my willingness to depend upon the Lord. As I prepare for sleep, fill my heart with gratitude and help me awaken ready to love and serve again.

Thought for the Evening: Name one burden you cannot resolve tonight. Entrust it to the Lord in prayer, then allow yourself to rest in His care.
