As the Day Begins
“To keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.” —2 Corinthians 12:7, ESV
Some mornings, the hardest thing to face is the difficulty that has become familiar. We have prayed about it, adjusted our lives around it, and wondered why it remains. Paul understood that experience. His extraordinary encounters with God did not exempt him from persistent distress. He does not identify his thorn precisely, and we should leave that question open. What he does explain is how Christ met him within it: “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12:9).
I think of an orchestra whose musicians must listen as carefully as they play. Talent becomes useful when each person follows the conductor and makes room for others. Our gifts require that same humility before God. The weakness we bring to Christ can become the place where we learn to depend on His strength. This does not make suffering pleasant or mean we should refuse appropriate help. Paul himself asked for relief. Yet when the difficulty remained, he discovered that Christ’s grace remained also. Today, we can ask for healing while trusting the Savior who sustains us.
Heavenly Father, I begin this morning acknowledging how easily I measure myself by what I accomplish or how others respond to me. Thank You for every ability and opportunity You have entrusted to me. Keep me from treating Your gifts as proof of my importance. Where I feel limited, help me receive Your care without shame. Give me humility to accept assistance, wisdom to seek what is helpful, and patience with the things I cannot resolve today.
Jesus the Son, You heard Paul’s repeated prayer, and You hear mine. I bring You the difficulty that returns to my thoughts before the day has properly begun. I ask for relief, healing, and renewed strength. As I wait, teach me to trust Your sufficient grace. Guard me from believing that my usefulness depends upon appearing strong. Let Your compassion shape how I speak, serve, and respond when my own resources feel small.
Holy Spirit, make me attentive to Your guidance in ordinary moments today. When pride urges me to prove myself, turn my attention toward faithful service. When discouragement tells me to withdraw, show me one loving action I can take. Help me listen to others and recognize their gifts with gratitude. Keep my limitations from becoming an excuse for unkindness. Form in me a quiet dependence that welcomes Your strength and gives God the glory. Amen.
Thought for the Day: Name one burden you have been trying to carry alone. Bring it honestly to Christ, then take one practical step toward receiving support or fulfilling today’s responsibility. You do not have to conceal your weakness to serve God faithfully. Allow His grace to shape both your expectations of yourself and your patience with others.
