As the Day Begins
“Preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ.” —1 Peter 1:13
A pilot practices difficult decisions before an emergency ever appears outside the cockpit. I find a helpful spiritual lesson there: the moment of temptation is a difficult place to begin deciding what I believe. Peter calls us to prepare our minds, remain clearheaded, and anchor our hope in Christ’s coming grace. His instructions follow the celebration of salvation in the opening verses of this chapter. We prepare for obedience because God has given us a living hope. Grace gives us both a reason to pursue holiness and confidence that we can seek God’s help.
This morning, preparation may look ordinary: deciding what I will watch, how I will respond to frustration, or whom I will call when temptation grows persuasive. Such choices help me follow through on my desire to honor Christ. I know how easily an unguarded moment can become an excuse for something I had already recognized as harmful. Peter directs my attention toward the grace awaiting me when Jesus is revealed. With that future before me, I can choose today’s path more carefully. A settled commitment, renewed in prayer, can steady me when passing desires demand an immediate answer.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for meeting this morning with mercy before I have accomplished anything. You know where my judgment becomes clouded and where I am inclined to bargain with temptation. Help me acknowledge those places honestly. Give me wisdom to make faithful decisions while my mind is clear. Teach me to welcome the boundaries that protect love, integrity, and obedience. Let my confidence rest in Your faithfulness as I prepare for this day.
Jesus the Son, keep my hope fixed on the grace I will fully know at Your appearing. When a momentary pleasure seems more desirable than faithfulness, remind me of Your love and the life You have called me to share. You understand temptation and have remained faithful through it. Help me follow You in the private decisions that shape my character. Where I have stumbled, lead me into honest repentance and renewed obedience.
Holy Spirit, bring Scripture to mind before my emotions take command. Help me recognize the first small compromises that draw me toward greater harm. Give me courage to leave a tempting situation, end an unhealthy conversation, or ask a trusted believer for help. Make me attentive to Your leading and willing to act upon it. Shape my desires so that doing what pleases God becomes increasingly precious to me.
Thought for the Day: Identify one situation in which you regularly struggle. Before it arises, decide on one faithful response and put that decision into practice. Prepare with prayer, remembering that your hope rests in Christ’s grace.
