What Are You Carrying Today?

As the Day Begins

“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing.” — James 1:2–4, KJV

I sometimes picture each of us pushing a wheelbarrow filled with things others cannot see: an unanswered prayer, a strained relationship, a troubling diagnosis, or grief that grows heavier in the quiet hours. We would gladly unload much of it. James writes to believers facing trials and invites them to consider what God can produce as they endure. We can grieve what hurts while trusting God to strengthen our faith within it. Counting trials as joy means recognizing that suffering cannot place us beyond His faithful care.

The Greek word hypomonē, translated “patience” or “steadfastness,” describes endurance—the willingness to remain faithful under pressure. James points toward maturity when he speaks of becoming complete. Such growth takes time, and it often includes tears, questions, and help from others. Today’s burden does not have to become today’s bitterness; we can bring it honestly into God’s presence. I may need to seek wise counsel, accept practical assistance, or take one difficult step of obedience. Through it all, I can ask the Lord to cultivate a faith that continues to love and trust Him.

Heavenly Father, You know what I am carrying before I find the words to describe it. I bring You the concerns that greeted me this morning and the fears I have tried to conceal. Thank You for welcoming me with compassion. Help me receive this day without demanding that I understand everything it holds. Give me wisdom to address what needs attention, humility to accept help, and courage to entrust what lies beyond my control to Your care. Let Your goodness steady my heart.

Jesus the Son, You know sorrow, weariness, and the pain of rejection. When I struggle, remind me that I am following a Savior who understands suffering. Keep me close when disappointment tempts me to withdraw. Teach me to pray honestly and obey faithfully, even when the way ahead remains unclear. Forgive the resentment I have allowed to settle within me. Shape my responses through Your patient love, and help me offer another burdened person the kindness I have received from You.

Holy Spirit, strengthen me in the ordinary moments when endurance feels difficult. Guard my words when I am tired and guide my thoughts when worry begins to circle. Help me recognize the difference between faithful perseverance and refusing needed support. Bring Scripture to mind, prompt me toward prayer, and make me receptive to encouragement. As I walk through today’s difficulties, cultivate gentleness, hope, and steadfast love within me. Let my growing dependence on God become a source of compassion for others. Amen.

Thought for the Day: Name one burden before God this morning, then identify one faithful step you can take while entrusting its outcome to Him.
