As the Day Begins
“Whoever guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.” —Proverbs 13:3
Before I check the messages waiting on my phone or begin the conversations this day will bring, I need to consider what my words will carry. Will they offer patience, or pass along my frustration? Will someone feel safer after speaking with me? Proverbs reminds us that guarding our mouths protects more than our reputation. It protects relationships entrusted to our care. A moment of restraint can spare someone a wound that takes years to heal. We cannot always prevent an angry thought from arriving, but we can refuse to give it a voice.
Guarding our speech also means making room for words that should be spoken. Someone may need encouragement, an honest apology, or a gentle explanation of a difficult truth. Jesus showed us that grace and truth belong together. His example draws me beyond simply avoiding hurtful remarks toward actively blessing others. The question is more than whether my words are accurate; it is whether I am speaking them with the love of Christ. Today, I want to listen long enough to understand before deciding what to say.
Heavenly Father, thank You for hearing me with patience. You know the thoughts beneath my words, including the pride and irritation I sometimes disguise as honesty. Search my heart this morning. Help me recognize when I am speaking to serve someone and when I am merely trying to win. Give me enough humility to receive correction and enough compassion to remember that every person I meet carries burdens I cannot see. Let my words reflect the kindness You continually show me.
Jesus the Son, I am grateful that Your truth comes with mercy. Teach me to speak as Your disciple. When I feel misunderstood, keep me from answering with contempt. When someone needs correction, help me offer it gently and clearly. Bring to mind anyone wounded by something I have said, and give me courage to apologize without excuses. Use my voice today to encourage the discouraged, defend someone treated unfairly, and express the love I too often leave unspoken.
Holy Spirit, guide the small pauses between what I hear and how I respond. Make me attentive when another person is speaking. Restrain the impatient interruption, the unnecessary criticism, and the story that belongs to someone else. When silence would become avoidance, strengthen me to speak faithfully. When speaking would only feed an argument, help me remain quiet. Shape my heart so that gracious speech grows from Your work within me.
Thought for the Day: Before one difficult conversation today, pause and pray, “Lord, help me understand this person and choose words that serve Your purpose.” Proverbs 13:3 teaches that disciplined speech protects life; James 1:19 shows us where to begin—with patient listening.
