Who Will Set the Tone Today?

As the Day Begins

“Do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart.” — Ephesians 5:18–19

Before the day gets far along, something will begin setting its tone. It may be a troubling headline, an unfinished responsibility, or yesterday’s disappointment. Paul invites us to begin with a different influence: the Holy Spirit. His instruction reaches beyond a moment of inspiration into the ordinary business of living. Who will guide my words when I feel irritated? What will govern my response when plans change? Being filled with the Spirit means yielding our everyday lives to the One who makes us more like Jesus.

Notice how quickly Paul moves from fullness to fellowship and song. The Spirit’s work reaches our relationships, our speech, and the gratitude we offer God. We may begin the morning with a weary heart, yet still turn toward Him in trust. A familiar hymn, a quiet prayer, or a deliberate act of kindness can become an expression of that surrender. We cannot manufacture spiritual fullness through determination. We can bring our willing hearts before God, receive His instruction, and obey what He shows us. His presence is a gift; our response is an open life.

Father, I thank You that I enter this day as someone You love. Before I measure myself by what I accomplish, help me remember Your grace. You know the responsibilities ahead and the concerns I have carried into this morning. Keep anxiety from directing my decisions. Teach me to receive Your provision with gratitude and to recognize the people You place before me as opportunities to love.

Lord Jesus, I want Your character to shape my conduct today. Forgive me for the times I defend my impatience or excuse my unkindness. You welcomed interruptions, noticed suffering, and obeyed Your Father through costly circumstances. Help me follow You in the conversations and decisions awaiting me. When I feel overlooked, steady my heart. When someone needs kindness, make me willing to give it without expecting recognition.

Holy Spirit, I yield my thoughts, desires, and reactions to You. Bring Scripture to mind when I need direction. Make me attentive when conviction calls for repentance. Grow Your fruit in the places where my habits resist Your work. Let gratitude find its way into my words and worship into my heart. Help me encourage someone today with the comfort and patience I have received from You.

Thought for the Day: Before opening your messages or beginning your busiest task, pause and pray, “Holy Spirit, guide my response.” Then choose one expression of obedience: answer gently, give thanks, or encourage someone. A surrendered morning becomes visible in the way we treat people throughout the day.

Ephesians 5:18–19 connects being filled with the Spirit to worship and mutual encouragement. In the verses that follow, Paul also emphasizes thanksgiving and submission to one another. This passage gives Christians a practical pattern for daily spiritual growth: welcome the Spirit’s direction, worship from the heart, and let faith shape life together.
