As the Day Ends
“And should not I pity Nineveh, that great city?” —Jonah 4:11, ESV
Jonah grieved over a plant that had sheltered him, yet resented God’s mercy toward Nineveh. The plant mattered because it relieved his discomfort. The people troubled him because God had spared them. As evening comes, I hear God’s question reaching into my own priorities. Have I been more disturbed by an inconvenience than moved by someone’s need for mercy?
God patiently exposed Jonah’s narrow concern. He also invites us to examine what has occupied our hearts today. The comfort I receive from God should make me more attentive to the people who still need His mercy. Tonight, we can confess our indifference without hiding from Him. The Lord who questioned Jonah is compassionate toward us, even as He teaches us to care more generously.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for the compassion that has sustained me through this day. You have seen needs I overlooked and understood burdens I barely noticed. Forgive me for becoming absorbed in my comfort while giving little thought to those who do not know Your love. I confess the resentment that sometimes rises when mercy reaches someone I find difficult. Help me remember how generously You have treated me. Tonight, I entrust my unfinished concerns to You and ask You to enlarge my willingness to care.
Jesus the Son, You welcomed sinners and gave Yourself for people who could never repay Your kindness. I need Your patient love to reshape my responses. Forgive the dismissive thought, the hurried conversation, and the opportunity for kindness I allowed to pass. Bring someone to mind whom I can encourage tomorrow. Help me approach that person with respect, listen without preparing a judgment, and speak of Your grace when an opportunity comes. As I rest, remind me that Your mercy remains my hope and the hope I may share.
Holy Spirit, search the places in my heart where self-interest has crowded out compassion. Show me how to pray for people whose stories I do not understand. Give me wisdom to offer appropriate help and courage to follow through. Keep me from treating anyone as an interruption to more important things. Let tomorrow’s ordinary encounters become opportunities for faithful witness. Quiet my defensiveness tonight, make me teachable, and help me rest in God’s care while remaining open to His correction.
Thought for the Evening: Name one person before God tonight; ask how you might show them Christ’s compassion tomorrow.
