As the Day Ends
“But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’ Submit yourselves therefore to God.” —James 4:6–7
A child reluctantly settles into his seat after repeated instructions, then announces, “I’m sitting down on the outside, but I’m standing up on the inside.” We smile because we recognize the feeling. Tonight, I wonder where that same resistance has appeared in me. Perhaps I spoke courteously while rehearsing an angry response, or fulfilled a responsibility while resenting everyone involved. God sees beneath outward compliance. He invites me to bring Him the heart I actually have, including the reluctance I would rather conceal.
James places a promise before his command: God gives more grace. Humility begins when I admit my need and welcome His help. The Greek verb hypotassō, translated “submit,” carries the sense of placing oneself under authority. Here, that authority belongs to the God who gives grace. I can surrender honestly because the One who corrects me also welcomes me. Submission may begin with a quiet confession: “Lord, I obeyed Your instruction today, but I resisted You within.” I can entrust that divided heart to Him and ask for willing obedience tomorrow.
Heavenly Father, You know where pride shaped my thoughts today. Forgive the resentment I concealed beneath acceptable words. I acknowledge that Your wisdom reaches beyond my understanding. Help me receive correction without defending every choice. Thank You for giving more grace when I come humbly. As I rest tonight, loosen my determination to control every outcome and teach me to trust Your care.
Jesus the Son, You welcomed the weary and called them to learn Your gentleness. I bring You the weariness of protecting my own importance. Forgive my grudging service and my impatience with others. Let Your love reshape the way I understand obedience. Help me follow You with growing willingness, trusting that Your yoke is good and Your presence will sustain me.
Holy Spirit, reveal what I need to confess without letting me retreat into discouragement. Make Scripture clear to me, and strengthen my desire to respond faithfully. Where I remain inwardly resistant, nurture trust. Where I have wounded someone, prepare me to seek reconciliation. Quiet my thoughts tonight, and help me welcome tomorrow as another opportunity to walk humbly with God. Amen.
Thought for the Evening: Name one place where you resisted God today. Confess it simply, receive His grace, and entrust tomorrow’s obedience to His help.
James 4:6–7 connects humility, grace, and submission: we acknowledge our need, receive God’s help, and yield ourselves to His loving authority.
