As the Day Ends
“Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them.” —Mark 10:14, NIV
At the end of the day, we may still be trying to prove that we have done enough. There are unfinished responsibilities, conversations we wish we could repeat, and concerns that refuse to settle. Into that weariness comes the picture of Jesus welcoming children. The disciples had tried to turn away those bringing them, but Jesus made room. Mark tells us that He took the children in His arms and blessed them. These children offered no impressive record of accomplishments. They came needing the care another could give. Tonight, you can approach Jesus honestly, with your need still showing. His welcome invites trust.
When Jesus speaks of receiving God’s kingdom like a child, He draws our attention toward dependence and receptivity. The Greek verb dechomai, “receive,” helps us hear the invitation: God’s kingdom is something we welcome as a gift. Childlike faith can include serious questions and honest struggle. What it relinquishes is the claim that we can establish our own standing before God. As evening settles, I want to release that exhausting effort. We can confess the day’s failures, thank Him for its goodness, and entrust unfinished matters to His care. Rest begins as we allow ourselves to be recipients of the love we cannot earn.
Heavenly Father, I come to You with the whole of this day. You know where I served gladly, where I grew impatient, and where anxiety shaped my responses. Forgive my attempts to make self-sufficiency a virtue. Thank You for receiving me through Your Son and for attending to needs I sometimes struggle to name. Help me lay down the responsibility for controlling every outcome. Watch over those I love, especially those whose circumstances remain unsettled. Teach me to receive Your care with gratitude as I prepare to rest tonight.
Jesus the Son, Your welcome of the children helps me bring my own weakness into Your presence. Thank You for making room for those others considered an interruption. Forgive me when I measure people by their usefulness or hide my need behind an appearance of strength. Draw me closer to You in simple, honest trust. I place my regrets before Your mercy and my unanswered questions before Your wisdom. Let the memory of Your compassion quiet my heart, and teach me to extend that same welcome tomorrow.
Holy Spirit, settle my restless thoughts and turn my attention toward the promises of God. Where confession is needed, guide me gently into truth. Where weariness has become discouragement, renew my hope. Help me remember that receiving help does not diminish my worth. Make me willing to accept the kindness You provide through others. Guard my heart through the night, and prepare me to rise with a teachable spirit. May my final prayer be an act of trust in the Father’s faithful care. Amen.
Thought for the Evening: Open your hands as you pray. Name one burden you are entrusting to God before sleep.
Mark 10:13–16 connects receiving the kingdom with childlike dependence and Jesus’ personal welcome. His blessing invites us to bring our need openly before Him.
