A Word to Rest Your Heart Upon

As the Day Ends

“All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Timothy 3:16–17, NIV.

At the close of a day, many voices can linger in our minds: something we regret saying, a troubling report, or a question we cannot answer. Paul directs Timothy toward Scripture amid the pressures of faithful service. The Greek word theopneustos, “God-breathed,” identifies its divine source. Through these writings, God teaches, corrects, and prepares His people to live faithfully. The Word that searches our hearts also directs us toward the Savior in whom we find rest.

Paul first reminds Timothy that the sacred writings make him wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. That keeps our reading centered on a relationship. Tonight, we can open Scripture ready to receive instruction and mercy together. A correction may show us where repentance is needed; a promise may steady our fears. We need not settle every question before sleeping. We can entrust unfinished matters to God while remaining willing to obey what He has made clear.

Heavenly Father, thank You for speaking through Scripture with truth and patience. As I consider this day, help me receive Your instruction without defensiveness. Where I have sinned, lead me into honest confession. Where worry has crowded my thoughts, remind me of Your faithfulness. Give me a quiet heart that welcomes Your correction and rests in Your care.

Jesus the Son, thank You that Scripture leads me to salvation through faith in You. Keep my reading attentive to Your character, Your sacrifice, and Your risen life. Forgive the ways I have heard Your teaching without following it. Help me make any needed repair tomorrow. Tonight, I entrust myself to Your mercy and sustaining love.

Holy Spirit, deepen my understanding of the Word You inspired. Bring its truth to mind when anxiety returns. Train my thoughts, soften my responses, and strengthen my willingness to obey. Help me carry one clear teaching into tomorrow. As I lie down, turn my attention toward God’s goodness and grant me peaceful, refreshing sleep. Amen.

Thought for the Evening: Read a short passage slowly. Receive its instruction, pray about your response, and entrust the night to God.

Second Timothy 3:15–17 connects Scripture’s divine origin with salvation in Christ and practical preparation for faithful living.
