As the Day Begins
“Some Pharisees who were with him heard him say this and asked, ‘What? Are we blind too?’” —John 9:40, NIV
It is possible to look directly at something and still miss what matters. In John 9, Jesus restores the sight of a man born blind, yet some religious leaders refuse to recognize what the miracle reveals about Him. Their certainty becomes a barrier to understanding. I find their question searching: Could I become so confident in my own judgment that I stop listening to Jesus? Spiritual sight begins with the humility to admit that I need His light. This morning, I want to open Scripture ready to receive correction as well as comfort.
The healed man’s understanding grows throughout the chapter until he confesses faith in Jesus and worships Him. Meanwhile, those who insist they already see remain resistant. Jesus exposes their responsibility for rejecting the light before them. Knowing about God must never replace listening to God. Before today’s responsibilities gather around us, we can ask Christ to uncover an assumption, soften a prejudice, or reveal a neglected act of love. His correction leads us toward truth and a closer walk with Him.
Heavenly Father, I begin this morning grateful that You know me completely and still invite me into Your presence. I confess that I sometimes defend my opinions more eagerly than I examine my heart. Help me receive Your Word with humility. Show me where pride has narrowed my vision or familiarity has weakened my attention. Give me patience with those whose understanding is still growing, and remind me how patiently You have guided me. Let gratitude shape the way I meet this day.
Jesus the Son, You sought the man others questioned and dismissed. Thank You for making Yourself known to him and receiving his worship. Seek out the places in my life where I have resisted Your truth. Help me recognize Your authority in Scripture and respond with trust. When Your teaching unsettles me, keep me close enough to listen. Give me courage to obey what You make clear, and help me speak of Your mercy with the honesty of someone who has received it.
Holy Spirit, make me attentive to the truth You have given through Scripture. Interrupt my careless judgments and bring to mind what Jesus teaches. When I encounter someone difficult to understand, help me listen before deciding that I already know their story. Give me discernment without harshness and conviction without pride. Strengthen my willingness to confess error, receive counsel, and begin again. Through today’s conversations and decisions, cultivate a teachable heart that welcomes the light of Christ.
Thought for the Day: Before responding to a difficult person or situation, pause and pray, “Lord Jesus, help me see what I may be missing.” Then listen carefully and choose one response consistent with His teaching.
John 9 connects the healing of physical blindness with the revelation of Jesus’ identity. The chapter invites Christian readers to examine spiritual pride, receive Christ’s truth, and grow in humble, obedient faith.
