As the Day Begins
“You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house.” —Acts 20:20, NIV
Some conversations leave us choosing between being comfortable and being helpful. I understand the temptation to say only what will be welcomed. Yet Paul’s farewell to the Ephesian elders reminds me that love sometimes requires courage. Speaking at Miletus, he recalled a ministry that carried God’s truth into public gatherings and ordinary homes. He taught what would help people turn toward God in repentance and trust Jesus Christ (Acts 20:21). Faithful love cares enough about another person’s spiritual good to speak the truth with patience.
Paul’s courage belonged alongside his humility and tears (Acts 20:19). That matters. We can speak accurate words with an attitude that makes them harder to receive. Before I consider correcting someone today, I need to let Scripture examine me. Am I seeking their good? Have I listened carefully? Am I willing to receive the same correction? God’s Word must shape both the message I share and the manner in which I share it. The goal is to help someone walk more closely with Jesus.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for loving me enough to speak honestly about my sin and generously about Your mercy. Forgive me when I prefer approval to faithfulness, or when I mistake my own opinions for Your truth. Give me a teachable heart before You give me words for someone else. Help me recognize the conversations that require courage today. Let my concern for another person grow from prayer, careful listening, and a sincere desire for their good.
Jesus the Son, You welcomed struggling people and called them into a changed life. Teach me to follow Your example. Keep me from using truth to display my knowledge or defend my pride. When I must say something difficult, help me remember my own need for forgiveness. Give me words that are clear, gracious, and faithful to Scripture. May the person who hears me also see something of Your patience and compassion.
Holy Spirit, search the motives beneath my words. Show me when fear makes me silent and when impatience makes me speak too quickly. Bring the Scriptures to mind and help me understand them in their context. Make me receptive when You correct me through another believer. Guide my conversations toward repentance, faith, encouragement, and peace. I entrust both my words and their results to Your gracious work.
Thought for the Day: Before a difficult conversation, read Acts 20:17–21 and pray for humility. Choose words that serve the other person’s good, and remain willing to listen.
Acts 20:20 connects faithful teaching with what is spiritually helpful. Read alongside Paul’s humility in verse 19 and his gospel message in verse 21, it calls Christians to communicate biblical truth with courage, compassion, and personal integrity.
