As the Day Ends
“We ought therefore to show hospitality to such people so that we may work together for the truth.” —3 John 8, NIV
Some evenings we wonder whether anything we did mattered. We answered a call, prepared food, offered transportation, or prayed for someone serving far away. John’s letter to Gaius helps us recognize the value of such work. By welcoming traveling believers, Gaius participated in the mission they carried. Supporting someone who shares the gospel is itself meaningful service to Christ.
The Greek word synergoi means “fellow workers.” John uses it to describe those who support the truth through hospitality. The church’s work includes both those who travel and those who help them along. Tonight, remember that the Lord sees the practical kindness that made another person’s ministry possible. You may have helped carry the gospel today without ever standing before an audience.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for giving me a place among Your people and a share in Your work. Forgive me when I measure usefulness by visibility or compare my responsibilities with someone else’s. Help me recognize the people whose quiet service has sustained me. Bring their names to mind tonight, and teach me to express my gratitude. Where I have served without acknowledgment, keep resentment from taking root. Let me rest in Your knowledge of what was offered, and receive Your grace for whatever I left unfinished today.
Jesus the Son, You received the hospitality of others and taught Your disciples to serve. Help me follow You in the ordinary tasks that make room for another person’s needs. Give me generosity without a need to control the outcome or receive the credit. When someone else carries a responsibility I cannot fulfill, show me how to strengthen them. Make my home, my resources, and my attention available to Your purposes. Tonight, I entrust the people I have tried to help to Your faithful care.
Holy Spirit, open my eyes to opportunities I overlook. Teach me when to offer practical assistance, when to listen, and when to pray quietly. Give me discernment to support work that faithfully honors Christ and His truth. Strengthen those whose service has exhausted them today, and help them receive care from others. As I prepare for sleep, release me from the need to prove my importance. Form in me the patient generosity that helps Your people continue faithfully tomorrow.
Thought for the Evening: Thank one person whose practical help supports another’s ministry.
