As the Day Begins
“God said to Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’” —Exodus 3:14, NIV
When I open my Bible, I often bring questions about what I should do. How should I handle this difficulty? What should I say? Where should I go next? Those are reasonable questions, but the burning bush invites me to begin somewhere deeper: Who is the God who meets me here? Moses needed courage for an assignment he felt unable to fulfill. God answered by revealing Himself. The strength of Moses’ calling rested in the character of the One who called him.
The Hebrew expression ehyeh asher ehyeh, translated “I AM WHO I AM,” also carries the sense “I WILL BE WHAT I WILL BE.” It is related to the divine name YHWH revealed in Exodus 3:15. God cannot be reduced to a convenient description or placed under human control. Yet this mysterious, sovereign God had already promised Moses His presence in verse 12. I find encouragement there for today. Before I understand everything ahead, I can trust the One who goes with me. Knowing God gives obedience a foundation that knowing the next step alone cannot provide.
Heavenly Father, I come before You with plans, responsibilities, and questions that can easily crowd my thoughts. Help me begin this morning by attending to who You are. You heard Your people’s suffering and remembered Your covenant; teach me to trust Your faithful character. Forgive me when I search Your Word only for immediate solutions and overlook the privilege of knowing You. As I read today, open my heart to Your holiness, compassion, patience, and truth. Let what I discover about You shape how I meet everything else.
Jesus the Son, You have made the Father known through Your words, Your compassion, Your obedience, and Your sacrifice. Draw my attention to You when I become preoccupied with myself. Help me follow You without demanding an explanation for every turn in the road. When I feel inadequate, remind me that discipleship begins with answering Your invitation. Give me courage to obey what You have already made clear, and humility to keep learning from You throughout this day.
Holy Spirit, guide my reading beyond familiar words into attentive understanding. Guard me from imagining a god who merely agrees with my preferences. Let Scripture correct my assumptions and deepen my love for the living God. Bring to mind what I learn when conversations become difficult or decisions feel uncertain. Make my knowledge fruitful in patience, honesty, kindness, and faithful action, so that others encounter something of Christ’s character through my conduct.
Thought for the Day: Before asking, “What does this passage tell me to do?” ask, “What does this passage reveal about God?” Write down one answer, then let that truth guide a specific response today.
Exodus 3:12–15 connects God’s self-revelation with His promise to accompany Moses. Christian spiritual growth likewise involves learning God’s character through Scripture and responding with trust, worship, and obedience.
