The Family Resemblance

As the Day Begins

“For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters.” —Romans 8:29, NIV

When we spend enough time with someone we love, their expressions sometimes become our own. We borrow a phrase, recognize their concerns, or begin responding with a familiar kindness. This morning, I find myself asking whose likeness my life is taking on. Romans 8:29 tells me what God intends for His children: a growing resemblance to Jesus. The Greek word symmorphos, translated “conformed,” describes sharing a likeness or form. God’s purpose reaches beyond getting me through today; He is shaping the person I am becoming.

That promise gives Romans 8:28 its direction. The good God accomplishes includes making us more like His Son. This does not make cruelty good or grief painless. Earlier in the chapter, Paul acknowledges suffering and creation’s groaning. Yet suffering cannot cancel God’s saving purpose. A difficult conversation may become an opportunity for patience; an interruption may invite compassion. I cannot explain every hardship, but I can ask for grace to meet it faithfully. Even when I cannot trace God’s work, I can practice the character of Christ in the next thing before me.

Heavenly Father, I begin this day grateful that Your purpose for me rests in Your faithful love. I often measure a good day by how smoothly everything goes. Teach me to recognize the quieter good of growing in patience, honesty, and mercy. When disappointment unsettles me, help me bring You my questions without withdrawing my trust. Keep me from assigning easy explanations to another person’s suffering. Make me tender toward those who struggle, and willing to receive the correction and encouragement You provide.

Jesus the Son, I want my life to bear Your family resemblance. Let Your compassion shape how I notice people, Your humility govern how I speak, and Your obedience direct the choices nobody else sees. Forgive me for wanting the blessings of following You while resisting the surrender discipleship requires. When I feel overlooked, remind me of Your willingness to serve. When I am tempted to answer harshly, help me pause. Draw me close enough to learn Your ways and courageous enough to follow them.

Holy Spirit, open my heart to the Scripture I read and the opportunities I might otherwise miss. Help me recognize resentment before it becomes my settled attitude, and pride before it directs my response. Strengthen me to choose one faithful act when the whole day feels overwhelming. Bring the words of Jesus to mind when I need wisdom. As You continue Your transforming work, teach me to cooperate through prayer, repentance, and obedience. Let someone encounter the kindness of Christ through my ordinary life today. Amen.

Thought for the Day: Before your next demanding conversation, pause and ask, “What would reflect the character of Jesus here?” Choose one concrete response—listening patiently, speaking truth gently, or offering practical help—and make it an act of willing obedience.

Romans 8:28–29 connects God’s work for good with His purpose of conforming believers to Christ. Christian spiritual growth involves learning the Son’s character while trusting the Father through circumstances we may not understand.
