Matthew 5:4 “Those who mourn are fortunate! for they shall be comforted.”
The Greek word for mourn is the strongest word in that language to designate it—thus it refers to mourning for the dead. People who mourn loved ones know there is no other hope but in the Savior. They experience the reality of the comfort brought by the certainty of eternal life.
Jesus’ words seem to contradict each other. How can people who mourn be fortunate? But God’s way of living usually contradicts the world’s. If you want to live for God you must be ready to say and do what seems strange to the world. You must be willing to give when others take, to love when others hate, to help when others abuse. By giving up your own rights in order to serve others, you will one day receive everything God has in store for you.
