How Much Will You Lose?

“How much will you lose if you follow Jesus?” That’s the devil’s favorite question; he has successfully used it more than any other to lead billions to hell.

The Bible clearly warns that there will be loss in following Jesus. However, it also teaches that there are compensating gains. So, in addition to counting the cost, we must also count the profit. Yes, there are expenses, but there’s also income.

Proverbs 3:1–10 helps us answer God’s question, “How much will you gain if you follow wisdom?” In this article, we’ll audit wisdom’s material gains.

Wisdom Will Usually Make Your Life Better in the Long Term

Let’s pause to identify three general principles that will help us in our Wisdom University classes. First, by saying “usually,” we’re acknowledging that the proverbs give us general rules, but also that there are exceptions. Proverbs are not cast-iron guarantees, but general maxims that usually work out in life (though not always in the way we think).

Second, in the context of the book of Proverbs, better means “more blessed by God,” which means “more approved by God.” That approval is sometimes manifested in material success, but always in spiritual prosperity.

Third, the proverbs are more about the long term. We might experience short-term losses along the way, but ultimately we’ll attain perfectly blessed living forever.

Wisdom promises short-term pains but long-term gains.

Four Rewards from Wisdom

Proverbs 3:1–10 has five sections that call us to a certain action with an incentive that follows that action. It’s a “rule-reward” pattern. Verses 1–2 introduce the pattern and verses 3–10 show us how it works out in four specific areas.

Rule: Remember and obey my commands from the heart (Prov. 3:1).

Reward: Increased quantity and quality of life (Prov. 3:2; Ex. 20:12; John 6:35, 68). A reward is a valuable outcome or result that is earned or received as a result of one’s actions, efforts, or qualities. In this context, the reward mentioned is associated with various scriptures, namely Proverbs 3:2, Exodus 20:12, and John 6:35 and 68. These passages highlight the idea that by following certain principles and beliefs, individuals can experience an improvement in both the quantity and quality of their lives. Proverbs 3:2 emphasizes the importance of wisdom and understanding in gaining favor with God and finding prosperity. It suggests that by adhering to moral and ethical principles, individuals can experience a fulfilling and rewarding life. Exodus 20:12, one of the Ten Commandments, focuses on honoring one’s parents. By honoring and respecting parents, individuals can receive a reward in the form of a long life, harmony within the family, and a prosperous future. John 6:35 and 68 present the teachings of Jesus Christ. In these verses, Jesus describes Himself as the bread of life, offering satisfaction and fulfillment to those who believe in Him. By having faith in Jesus, individuals can receive the reward of eternal life and a deep connection with God. Overall, the text highlights the concept of reward, particularly in relation to living a righteous and faithful life. It suggests that by following certain principles and beliefs, individuals can experience an increase in the quantity and quality of their lives, both in the present and in the afterlife.

But remember, this rule-reward structure is in the context of a loving relationship. The chapter begins with “my son.” Rules cannot start a relationship, but they do keep it happy and healthy. It’s not “here are the rules to become my son” but “here are the rules to keep our Father-child relationship healthy.”

Better relationships (Prov. 3:3–4)

Rule: Tattoo kindness and truth on your heart and wear them as a necklace.

Reward: You will not only experience immense joy and happiness, but also earn divine love and utmost respect from both God and the people around you. This assurance is beautifully conveyed in Luke 2:52, reminding us of the invaluable blessings that await those who embrace righteousness and live a life in accordance with God’s will. It is a profound message that speaks to the depth of our souls and serves as a constant reminder to strive for goodness and virtue in all our endeavors.

Better choices (Prov. 3:5–6)

Rule: In every situation, wholeheartedly submit to God’s providence and follow his word instead of your own intelligence.

Reward: God will guide you along a straight path to better decisions. In this journey towards self-improvement and enlightenment, you will find great satisfaction and fulfillment. With every step you take on this path, you will grow stronger and wiser, unlocking new opportunities and possibilities. Trust in the divine guidance that will lead you towards making choices that align with your values and aspirations. Embrace the challenges that come your way, for they serve as stepping stones towards your ultimate success. Remember, God’s rewards are abundant and everlasting, and by following this straight path, you will reap the benefits of a life well-lived.

Better health (Prov. 3:7–8)

Rule: Don’t be in awe of your own mind but of God’s, in order to stop sinning.

Reward: You will flourish and thrive in every way, spiritually and physically. It is a promise that is echoed throughout the scriptures, reminding us of the abundant blessings that await those who diligently seek the Lord’s favor. As the scriptures teach, “A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband, but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones” (Proverbs 12:4). Indeed, a spouse who is wise, loving, and full of grace brings untold joy and strength to the marriage bond. Additionally, “A sound heart is the life of the flesh: but envy the rottenness of the bones” (Proverbs 14:30). By cultivating a heart free from envy and bitterness, and instead embracing contentment and gratitude, we not only experience greater physical well-being, but also enjoy harmonious relationships and a tranquil spirit. “The light of the eyes rejoiceth the heart: and a good report maketh the bones fat” (Proverbs 15:30). When our eyes are filled with the light of hope and optimism, and when we choose to focus on the positive rather than the negative, our hearts are uplifted and our physical health benefits. Moreover, “Pleasant words are as an honeycomb, sweet to the soul, and health to the bones” (Proverbs 16:24). The power of positive speech and kindness cannot be overstated. When we speak life-giving words that build up and encourage others, not only are their spirits lifted, but our own souls are enriched. “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (Proverbs 17:22). Maintaining a joyful and grateful disposition has a profound impact on our physical well-being. Laughter and lightheartedness have been proven to reduce stress, boost the immune system, and even alleviate pain. Finally, let us not forget the beautiful words of the apostle John: “Beloved, I wish above all things that thou mayest prosper and be in health, even as thy soul prospereth” (3 John 2). This verse encapsulates the ultimate desire of God for His children: that we may experience prosperity and well-being on every level – emotionally, physically, and spiritually. So take heart, for the rewards of a flourishing and

Better finances (Prov. 3:9–10)

Rule: Recognize that all you have is from God and for God (Mark 12:44; 1 Cor. 16:2).

Reward: You will have all you need and more (Matt. 6:33; Mark 10:29–30). The reward that awaits you is one that transcends your earthly desires and encompasses your deepest needs. As you seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, you will find that He abundantly provides for all aspects of your life. Your provisions will not be limited to mere necessities, but will exceed your expectations, overflowing with blessings and abundance. The promises of Scripture, such as Matthew 6:33 and Mark 10:29–30, give you the assurance that as you prioritize your relationship with God and align yourself with His will, He will ensure that your needs are met and even surpassed. So, hold onto the promises of God and trust in His faithful provision, for He is a generous Father who desires to bless you abundantly beyond measure.

God gives us lesser rewards on earth to entice us to the highest rewards in heaven.
