As the Day Begins

Scripture: Luke 15:25-30 (NIV)

“Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near the house, he heard music and dancing. So, he called one of the servants and asked him what was going on. ‘Your brother has come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.’ The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So, his father went out and pleaded with him. But he answered his father, ‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my friends. But when this son of yours who has squandered your property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’”

Meditation
This passage centers on the older brother’s response to the return of the prodigal son, and through his experience, we are invited to examine our own hearts. The older son feels overlooked, bitter that his years of loyalty seem unrewarded. His frustration reveals the internal battle many of us face when we feel that our efforts are unnoticed or when others who appear less deserving receive the grace and favor, we desire. This speaks to the temptation to place our worth in performance or outward obedience rather than in our relationship with the Father. How often do we, like the older brother, struggle with jealousy when others are blessed? Yet, this passage reminds us that the Father’s love and generosity are not rewards for perfect behavior but are expressions of grace that flows from His heart.

The Father’s response to the older son is significant—he comes out to plead with him, offering the same invitation to join the celebration. This is a picture of God’s gentle pursuit of us, even when our hearts are hardened by bitterness or entitlement. Rather than chastising him, the father longs to bring the older son into the fullness of his joy. This speaks to God’s deep desire for us to experience His grace and love, not just in a distant, obedient manner, but in close fellowship with Him. The older son’s anger kept him outside of the feast, just as our bitterness can keep us from fully enjoying the life God offers. Reflecting on this, we are reminded that the Father’s love is abundant and that there is room at His table for all. It calls us to release any jealousy or resentment and enter into the joy of His presence.

Prayer
Heavenly Father, I come before You acknowledging the times when I have felt overlooked or frustrated, much like the older brother in this parable. There are moments when I feel like my efforts go unnoticed, and I find myself comparing my life to those around me, especially when it seems like they are blessed in ways I am not. Father, I ask for Your forgiveness for allowing jealousy and bitterness to take root in my heart. Help me to remember that Your love is not dependent on my performance, but it is a gift You freely give. Teach me to find contentment in Your presence, to trust that You see me and that Your timing for blessings is perfect. Help me not to resent the grace You show others, but to celebrate alongside them, knowing that Your goodness is boundless and that Your heart is for me as much as it is for anyone else.

Lord Jesus, I look to You as the perfect example of humility and grace. In my moments of frustration and comparison, remind me that You willingly laid down everything for the sake of others. Help me to have a heart like Yours, one that rejoices when the lost are found, and one that does not hold onto anger when things seem unfair. Jesus, I ask for Your peace to guard my heart, and for Your joy to fill me, even when circumstances feel difficult. Let me not measure my worth by what I do, but by what You have done for me on the cross. You have made me a beloved child of God, and for that, I am forever grateful. Help me to live out that identity with grace and compassion toward others.

Holy Spirit, I ask You to soften my heart where it has been hardened by jealousy or entitlement. Reveal to me any areas where I may be harboring bitterness and replace those feelings with Your love and joy. Lead me into deeper understanding of the Father’s love and help me to trust that there is enough for me. I invite You to work in my heart, transforming my mind so that I may celebrate the blessings of others and see the beauty of grace that is extended to all. Holy Spirit, guide me to walk in step with You, so that I can live in the freedom of knowing that I am fully known, fully loved, and fully accepted in God’s family. Help me to embrace the celebration of Your goodness, trusting that my place at the table is secure, and that Your joy is for me as well.

Thought for the Day
As you go through your day, remember that God’s grace is abundant and that there is room for you at His table. Do not let bitterness or comparison keep you from the joy that is yours in His presence. Celebrate the goodness of God in your life and in the lives of others, knowing that His love is limitless and that you are deeply valued.
