In the Face of Impossible Odds

Marty Via’s Calling

Marty Via didn’t expect to find himself in a small town like Waycross, Georgia. He had been living a relatively content life in Ohio, working in construction until an accident derailed his career. What seemed like a dead end, however, turned into a divine calling he never anticipated. As Marty prayed for direction, he and his family each felt an undeniable pull toward a town they had never heard of—Waycross. Following that nudge required radical faith. Imagine packing up your family and leaving behind everything you know based on a feeling you couldn’t quite explain. Yet, Marty trusted God, moved his family, and made the 18-hour drive to a place that seemed anything but promising.

When they arrived, the town looked rundown, with empty storefronts and few job opportunities. It was hard to understand why God had led them there. The doubts set in, but Marty didn’t give up. Instead, he turned to prayer, waking in the middle of a hot summer night to ask God for clarity. And it was in that quiet moment that the answer came: Marty was called to serve the people of Waycross by starting a benevolence mission. That night, God gave him the names of local pastors, and a new sense of purpose emerged. He had gone from a construction worker with no idea of what was next to a man on a mission to help others with food and clothes, all because he trusted God’s unexpected guidance.

The initial struggle to find direction seemed overwhelming, yet Marty’s faith sustained him. His decision to follow the divine prompting to Waycross not only reshaped his life but also impacted the lives of countless others in the community. The benevolence mission became a source of hope for many, providing essential needs and embodying the hands and feet of Christ in a place that had once felt like a dead end. What could have been a story of despair became one of transformation, simply because Marty listened to God’s voice and acted in faith. His story is a beautiful reminder that sometimes, when we feel lost or purposeless, God is calling us to something greater than we could ever imagine.

For modern readers, Marty’s journey reminds us of Proverbs 3:5-6: “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.” Even when the path seems uncertain, trusting God’s plan can lead to life-changing outcomes. Marty’s life was forever transformed by that moment of surrender and faith, and his obedience created a ripple effect that continues to bless his community.

As you reflect on this story, consider where God might be calling you to step out in faith, even if the way forward seems unclear. Sometimes, God’s guidance doesn’t make immediate sense, but trusting Him can lead to a purpose far beyond what we can see in the present. Ask yourself, Where might God be leading me that I haven’t yet explored? And more importantly, Am I willing to trust Him enough to follow, even when the destination is uncertain?
