As the Day Ends

The Stone Rejected, the Cornerstone

Psalm 118:21–22

Evening Meditation

“I will give You thanks, for You answered me; You have become my salvation. The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.”
(Psalm 118:21–22)

As the day draws to a close, Psalm 118 invites us to pause and reflect on the great and gracious work of God in our lives. The psalmist’s cry of thanksgiving rises from a heart that has seen deliverance not through personal strength, but through the intervention of God Himself. “I will give You thanks, for You answered me.” There is a rich emotional texture here—the joy of knowing that our cries do not vanish into the void but reach the ears of a loving and attentive God. As we review our day, with its triumphs and struggles, this verse reminds us to look beyond circumstances and see the hand of the One who answers.

The second part of the meditation moves us deeper into the mystery: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone.” This verse, quoted later in the New Testament (Matthew 21:42, Acts 4:11, and 1 Peter 2:7), points us unmistakably to Jesus Christ. He was the Stone rejected by men—cast aside by the religious leaders, betrayed by the crowds, crucified by the authorities. Yet in the magnificent reversal of God’s redemptive plan, the rejected Stone became the very foundation of salvation. What was deemed worthless by the world was chosen by God as the essential support for all who would believe.

Tonight, let this truth anchor your soul: the rejected become chosen in God’s economy. Perhaps today you felt overlooked, misunderstood, or even discarded. Remember, your worth is not determined by human appraisal but by divine selection. Christ, the Cornerstone, understands rejection. He walked it, bore it, and transformed it. As we lay our heads down tonight, we do so resting on the sure foundation that Christ is our salvation, and nothing that happens in this world can undo the secure place we have in Him.

Evening Prayer

Prayer to the Heavenly Father:
Heavenly Father, as this day ends, I lift my voice in gratitude to You. Thank You for answering me—not always in the way I expect, but always in the way that is best. Even when my heart is clouded with confusion, You are working, aligning every detail to Your perfect will. I praise You for the times today when You gave clarity and comfort, and I thank You also for the times You invited me to trust beyond what I could see. Father, You are my salvation. You have heard my cry in the secret places, and You have not turned away. I place my trust in You anew tonight, surrendering my plans, fears, and hopes into Your faithful hands.

Prayer to the Son, Jesus Christ:
Lord Jesus, Cornerstone of my life, I come to You with a heart both weary and grateful. Thank You for being the Stone that was rejected, for stepping into the deepest places of human pain to become the Rock on which my faith stands. I confess that there are moments when I have sought the approval of people more than the solid assurance of Your love. Forgive me, Lord, and center me once again on You. Teach me to build my life on Your truth, Your grace, and Your eternal promises. Even when I face rejection, loneliness, or misunderstanding, let me cling to You—the One who was despised yet is now exalted. I trust You, my unshakable foundation.

Prayer to the Holy Spirit:
Holy Spirit, Breath of God, I invite You to move within me as I settle into this night. Teach me to see beyond the surface, to discern the work of the Father in every answered prayer and even in every apparent silence. Fill me with Your peace that transcends understanding. Shape me into a living stone, fit to be part of the dwelling place of God. Guide my heart away from resentment when I face rejection, and help me to rejoice in being identified with Christ. Whisper truth into the hidden corners of my soul, reminding me that I am chosen, loved, and secured. As I sleep, Holy Spirit, be my Comforter and my Guide, preparing my heart for the new mercies that await in the morning.
