As the Day Ends
“To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believes in Jesus.”
Romans 3:26
As this day closes, Romans 3:26 invites us to rest in a truth greater than our failures: God does not forgive sin by pretending that it does not matter. He remains perfectly just, yet He justifies those who place their faith in Jesus. At the cross, righteousness and mercy were not enemies competing for the final word. God’s justice was satisfied through Christ’s sacrificial death, and His mercy was freely extended to undeserving sinners.
We are members of a fallen race, aware of good and evil yet repeatedly drawn toward what displeases God. If salvation depended upon our moral record, none of us could sleep peacefully tonight. But Christ, the Just One, died for the unjust. Jesus bore the penalty we could not escape and provided the righteousness we could never produce. Justification means that God declares the believing sinner righteous because of Christ—not because we have lived perfectly, but because Jesus has fully accomplished what was required.
Jesus said, “He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” The believer does not lie down tonight beneath the threat of condemnation. We rest beneath the finished work of Christ. We may confess today’s sins honestly because our hope is not in our goodness but in His grace.
Heavenly Father, I thank You that Your justice is pure and Your mercy is abundant. I confess that I have sinned in thought, attitude, word, and action. I cannot excuse myself or repair my standing before You. Yet I praise You for providing redemption through Your Son. Help me rest tonight in the assurance that You are both just and the justifier of everyone who believes in Jesus. Teach me to receive Your forgiveness with humility and to rise tomorrow ready to walk in grateful obedience.
Jesus the Son, I thank You for becoming the Just One who died for the unjust. You entered the darkness of the cross and bore the judgment my sin deserved. I place my confidence not in my performance but in Your completed sacrifice and victorious resurrection. Quiet every accusing voice that would draw me away from the gospel. Remind me that through faith in You I have passed from death into life. Let the wonder of Your grace soften my heart, deepen my worship, and shape the way I treat others.
Holy Spirit, bring the truth of Christ’s righteousness into the anxious places of my heart. Convict me where repentance is needed, but do not allow shame to hide the mercy of God from me. Guide me into honest confession, settled faith, and peaceful rest. Make the cross more than a doctrine I understand; make it the secure foundation upon which I live. As I sleep, renew my mind and prepare me to awaken with gratitude for the unspeakable gift of salvation.
Thought for the Evening
Before you close your eyes, confess what needs forgiveness and then stop carrying what Christ has already borne. Rest in this assurance: the Just died for the unjust, and everyone who believes in Jesus is welcomed into life.
