As the Day Ends
“For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps.” —1 Peter 2:21
As this day comes to a close, it is worth asking who has been shaping the pace of my life. Scripture repeatedly shows that people are influenced by those they admire, trust, and follow. Israel often reflected the spiritual condition of its kings. Under David, the people were drawn toward worship. Under Jeroboam, they were led toward idolatry. Leadership did not merely affect public policy; it influenced the moral imagination of the nation.
Yet the Christian’s highest pattern is not a king, pastor, teacher, public figure, or admired friend. Peter directs our attention to Christ. The Greek word translated “example,” hypogrammos, referred to a writing pattern placed before a student to be carefully copied. Jesus has placed His life before us as the pattern. His patience under suffering, obedience to the Father, compassion toward the weak, courage before opposition, and refusal to answer evil with evil reveal the moral pace of the kingdom of God.
This evening, I should examine the influences I allowed to guide me today. Did I imitate the anger around me, or the gentleness of Christ? Did I follow the pressure to promote myself, or the humility of the One who served? Leadership begins before anyone receives a title. My words, reactions, priorities, and private habits may already be setting a pace for someone else. Children watch parents, congregations watch leaders, friends observe friends, and the discouraged often look toward the faithful for direction.
The responsibility can feel heavy, but it is not carried alone. Christ does not merely command me to follow His steps; He walks with me through His Spirit. Where I failed today, grace invites confession rather than despair. Where I followed faithfully, gratitude belongs to God. Tonight I can release the burden of impressing others and ask instead for the quiet strength to resemble Jesus more closely tomorrow.
Heavenly Father, thank You for being the righteous and trustworthy authority over my life. Forgive me for the moments today when I allowed the opinions, habits, or expectations of others to shape me more than Your truth. Search my motives and show me where my example may have encouraged impatience, pride, compromise, or fear. Give me humility to remember that my life influences people even when I am unaware of it. As I rest tonight, settle my heart beneath Your wise leadership and prepare me to walk faithfully tomorrow.
Jesus the Son, thank You for leaving me a clear example to follow. You suffered without becoming cruel, served without demanding praise, and obeyed the Father even when obedience was costly. Teach me to follow Your steps in ordinary situations. When I am misunderstood, help me answer with grace. When I am given responsibility, keep me from using it selfishly. Where I failed to reflect You today, forgive me and restore me. Let Your character, not the spirit of the world, establish the pace of my life.
Holy Spirit, guide my thoughts, words, and decisions. Make me sensitive to the influence I receive and the influence I give. Strengthen me to reject harmful patterns, even when they are popular or familiar. Produce within me love, patience, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. During the night, quiet every anxious thought and renew my inner life. Tomorrow, help me lead first by following Christ.
