As the Day Ends
“…Yea, let God be true, but every man a liar.”
—Romans 3:4
As evening settles over us, Romans 3:4 calls us to place our confidence where it ultimately belongs—not in shifting opinions, changing circumstances, or even our own limited understanding, but in the unchanging character of God. Biblical faith is more than agreeing that certain evidence appears convincing. It is personal reliance upon the God whose words are always true because His nature is perfectly faithful. The Greek word translated “true,” alēthēs, speaks of that which is genuine, dependable, and consistent with reality. God does not merely tell the truth; He is the standard by which truth is measured.
There are days when what we see seems to contradict what God has promised. Pain may whisper that He has forgotten us. Delay may suggest that prayer is useless. Failure may insist that grace has reached its limit. Faith does not deny those emotions, but it refuses to enthrone them. Like Abraham, who trusted God even when circumstances appeared impossible, we may rest tonight knowing that the Lord remains faithful when our senses cannot explain His ways. We do not trust because every question has been answered. We trust because the One holding our unanswered questions cannot lie.
The Father, as this day ends, I thank You that Your character does not change with my circumstances. Forgive me for the moments when I treated fear, disappointment, or human opinion as more reliable than Your Word. When my understanding is incomplete, teach me to rest in Your perfect wisdom. When visible evidence appears discouraging, remind me that Your promises are anchored in who You are. I place today’s unresolved concerns into Your hands and trust You to remain faithful through the night.
The Son, thank You for revealing the truth of God through Your life, death, and resurrection. You trusted the Father even when the path led through suffering and the cross. Strengthen me to follow Your example of obedient faith. Help me bring my doubts honestly to You without allowing them to pull me away from You. Because You conquered sin and death, I can rest knowing that no darkness has the final word over those who belong to You.
The Holy Spirit, quiet the arguments of fear within me and bring the promises of Scripture to my remembrance. Give me discernment to recognize the difference between human reasoning and faithful dependence upon God. Where my mind is restless, establish peace. Where my faith is weak, strengthen my heart. Guide my thoughts as I sleep, and prepare me to awaken ready to trust, obey, and walk in truth.
