As the Day Ends
“But God said unto him, Thou fool, this night thy soul shall be required of thee; then whose shall those things be, which thou hast provided?”
Luke 12:20
As this day comes to a close, Jesus invites us to measure life by more than what we have accumulated. The rich man in Luke 12 had gathered enough to feel secure, yet his security rested in barns, crops, and possessions that could not follow him beyond death. His mistake was not that he had been productive. His error was that he treated temporary provision as though it were eternal treasure.
The heart was created for fellowship with God, but it can easily become fastened to money, possessions, recognition, or comfort. Earthly goods have legitimate value, yet they become spiritually dangerous when they occupy the place that belongs to God alone. The rich man spoke to his soul as though material abundance could provide lasting rest. Jesus exposed the illusion: the body may be surrounded by possessions while the soul remains impoverished.
This evening, we can ask whether the resources entrusted to us have been lifted toward eternal purposes. Money can feed the hungry. Time can comfort the lonely. Ability can strengthen the church. Influence can point someone toward Christ. What we place in God’s hands is not wasted; it is transformed into service, mercy, witness, and love.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for every provision You placed within my life today. Forgive me when I confuse possession with security or success with spiritual health. Teach me to hold earthly blessings with gratitude but not dependence. Search my heart and show me where I have stored my confidence in things that cannot last. Help me remember that my life, strength, time, and resources belong first to You. Let what I have become a channel of generosity rather than a wall of self-protection.
Jesus the Son, You left the riches of heaven and gave Yourself for my salvation. Keep me from living as though my comfort were the highest good. Show me how to convert ordinary resources into eternal service. May my words encourage, my hands serve, and my choices reflect Your compassion. If I have neglected someone I could have helped, give me wisdom to respond faithfully. Teach me to seek treasure in heaven by loving people, advancing truth, and honoring You.
Holy Spirit, quiet my striving as I prepare to rest. Reveal any attachment that has begun controlling my heart. Produce contentment, generosity, and eternal perspective within me. Help me see people as more valuable than possessions and obedience as more lasting than achievement. Guide me tomorrow so that I invest my energy in what survives the grave and glorifies God.
Thought for the Evening
Before you sleep, identify one resource God has entrusted to you—time, money, experience, influence, or compassion—and decide how you will use it tomorrow for someone else’s spiritual or practical good.
Luke 12:20 teaches that earthly wealth cannot secure the soul or extend human life. Jesus calls His followers to become rich toward God by using temporary resources for eternal purposes, loving people, and living in readiness before Him.
