As the Day Ends
“When his disciples heard it, they were exceedingly amazed, saying, Who then can be saved?” — Matthew 19:25
Jesus never persuaded people to follow Him by concealing the cost. In Matthew 19, the rich young ruler departed sorrowfully because obedience required a surrender he was unwilling to make. The disciples were astonished because they recognized that salvation could not be achieved through human strength, social standing, or religious effort. Jesus answered that what is impossible with humanity is possible with God. Grace saves us, but grace does not invite us into a life without sacrifice.
Samuel Rutherford wrote that when the wind blows in Christ’s face, those walking beside Him should not expect to remain sheltered from it. Christian discipleship includes peace with God, but it does not guarantee freedom from hardship. Jesus gives us truth rather than comforting illusions. He warned of rejection, persecution, self-denial, and the daily bearing of the cross. Yet He also promised His abiding presence: “Lo, I am with you alway” (Matthew 28:20).
Many believers become discouraged when following Christ becomes costly because they were led to expect uninterrupted comfort. Tonight, remember that adversity does not necessarily mean something has gone wrong. The opposing wind may confirm that you are walking beside the Savior. Christ does not promise that the road will always be easy; He promises that you will never walk it alone.
Heavenly Father, I thank You for loving me enough to tell me the truth about discipleship. Forgive me when I interpret hardship as evidence that You have abandoned me. Teach me to distinguish between Your peace and temporary comfort. When obedience costs more than I expected, help me trust Your wisdom and remain faithful. Strengthen me to rest tonight, not because every burden has disappeared, but because my life remains secure in Your hands.
Jesus the Son, thank You for never deceiving me with shallow promises. You walked the road of rejection, suffering, and the cross before calling me to follow. Give me courage when the wind blows against my faith. Keep me from turning back when discipleship becomes inconvenient or painful. Remind me that I am not saved by my endurance but by Your grace, and that the grace which saves me will also sustain me.
Holy Spirit, strengthen the places in me that became weary today. Expose expectations that were built on comfort rather than Scripture. Help me endure difficulty without bitterness and face opposition without fear. Produce in me steadfastness, humility, and hope. As I sleep, renew my courage so that tomorrow I may follow Christ honestly, faithfully, and without demanding the easier road.
Thought for the Evening
Do not judge Christ’s faithfulness by the strength of tonight’s wind. Rest in His presence, and tomorrow take the next obedient step beside Him.
