As the Day Ends

Matthew 17:1-13 (ESV):

“And after six days Jesus took with him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. And Peter said to Jesus, ‘Lord, it is good that we are here. If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you and one for Moses and one for Elijah.’ He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.’ When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, ‘Rise, and have no fear.’ And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, ‘Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.’ And the disciples asked him, ‘Then why do the scribes say that first Elijah must come?’ He answered, ‘Elijah does come, and he will restore all things. But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.’ Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist.”

Evening Meditation

As the day draws to a close, let us reflect on the   moment of Jesus’ Transfiguration on the mountain. This event is a revelation of His divine glory and a powerful affirmation of His identity as the Son of God. Picture the scene: Jesus’ face shining like the sun, His clothes dazzling white, and the appearance of Moses and Elijah standing beside Him. This vision is not only a testament to Jesus’ divine nature but also a fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets. As we ponder this, let the radiance of Jesus’ transformation illuminate our hearts and minds, reminding us of His supreme authority and the light He brings into our lives. In moments of doubt and fear, remember the voice from the cloud declaring, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” This divine endorsement calls us to place our trust in Jesus, to heed His words, and to rest in the assurance of His love and guidance.

The disciples’ reaction to this awe-inspiring vision—falling on their faces in fear—is met with Jesus’ gentle touch and comforting words, “Rise, and have no fear.” As we prepare to rest tonight, let these words resonate within us. Jesus’ touch dispels fear and brings peace, offering a reminder of His constant presence in our lives. Just as the disciples were lifted from their fear, we too can find solace in His embrace, knowing that He is with us in every moment. Reflect on how Jesus accompanies us through our daily struggles and uncertainties, providing comfort and strength. As we close our eyes, may we feel His touch reassuring us, and may His words, “Rise, and have no fear,” guide us into a peaceful and restful sleep, secure in the knowledge of His unwavering love and protection.
