A Cry for the Supernatural

Text: Exodus 3:7, 19, 20

Israel cried out for the supernatural after 430 years of slavery and bondage in Egypt. They realized that their liberation could not be achieved through natural means alone; they needed divine intervention. As they cried out from the depths of their souls, God heard them and responded with supernatural acts that demonstrated His power and love. Today, we too need to cry out for the supernatural in our lives, recognizing that many of our struggles and challenges require more than human effort. We need to call upon God, who is capable of doing exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think.

God is a Supernatural God

God’s nature is fundamentally supernatural. Hosea 11:9 declares, “I am God and not man.” This distinction emphasizes that God operates beyond the limitations of human capabilities and understanding. He is supernatural in His existence, being eternal, omnipotent, and omniscient. Unlike humans, God is not confined by time, space, or physical constraints. He spoke the universe into existence and upholds all things by the power of His word. A.W. Tozer aptly noted, “What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” Recognizing God as a supernatural being shifts our perspective, enabling us to approach Him with reverence and awe, fully aware that He can do what is impossible for us.

Moreover, God is supernatural in His power. Throughout the Bible, we see countless examples of His mighty acts that defy natural explanation. From parting the Red Sea to raising the dead, God’s power transcends the natural order. In Exodus 3:19-20, God promises to deliver Israel with a “mighty hand” and “great wonders.” These supernatural interventions remind us that God is actively involved in our world and that He is able to intervene in our lives in miraculous ways. When we acknowledge God’s supernatural power, we open ourselves to experiencing His miraculous interventions and His ability to transform our circumstances.

The Bible is a Supernatural Book

The Bible stands apart from all other literature as a supernatural book. 2 Peter 1:21 states, “Holy men of old spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” This verse highlights the divine inspiration behind the scriptures, affirming that the Bible is not merely a collection of human writings but the very word of God. The Bible gives us a comprehensive view of humanity’s past, present, and future. It reveals God’s plan for salvation, His interactions with His people, and His promises for the future. John Stott wrote, “The authority of Scripture means that all the words in Scripture are God’s words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God.”

The Bible’s supernatural nature is evident in its transformative power. It has the ability to convict, instruct, and renew the hearts and minds of those who read it. Hebrews 4:12 describes the word of God as “living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword.” This living word penetrates our innermost being, revealing our thoughts and intentions, and guiding us in the path of righteousness. As we engage with the scriptures, we encounter the living God who speaks to us through His word, offering wisdom, comfort, and guidance for every aspect of our lives. Embracing the Bible as a supernatural book deepens our faith and equips us to navigate life’s challenges with divine wisdom.

The New Birth is a Supernatural Birth

Jesus made it clear in John 3:7, “Marvel not that I say unto thee, Ye must be born again.” The new birth, or being born again, is a supernatural work of God in the life of a believer. It is not a result of human effort or natural descent, but a miraculous transformation brought about by the Holy Spirit. As Jesus explained to Nicodemus, this new birth is not of the flesh nor the will of man but of God. It signifies a radical change in one’s nature, from being spiritually dead to being spiritually alive. C.S. Lewis described it as a transformation so   that it is like starting a new life altogether.

This new birth is made possible through the incorruptible word of God. 1 Peter 1:23 states, “Being born again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, by the word of God, which liveth and abideth forever.” The word of God, when received in faith, brings about a new spiritual birth, giving us a new identity as children of God. This supernatural birth transforms our desires, our perspective, and our relationship with God. It marks the beginning of a new journey of faith, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and guided by the truth of God’s word.

The Christian Life is a Supernatural Life

The Christian life is fundamentally a supernatural life. Galatians 2:20 captures this truth beautifully: “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless, I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.” This verse speaks to the   reality that, as believers, our old self has been crucified with Christ, and we now live by His life within us. This new life is not sustained by our strength but by the power of the indwelling Christ. It is a life marked by supernatural strength, wisdom, and love that flows from our union with Jesus.

Living a supernatural life means walking in the Spirit and relying on God’s power to overcome sin and fulfill His purposes. It involves daily surrender to God’s will and a constant dependence on His grace. As we abide in Christ, His supernatural life flows through us, enabling us to bear fruit that glorifies God. The Apostle Paul experienced this reality and declared in Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” This supernatural life is characterized by victory over sin, the manifestation of the fruits of the Spirit, and a life of purpose and impact that extends beyond our natural abilities.

A Real Revival is a Supernatural Work of God

Revival, by its very nature, is a supernatural work of God. Psalm 85:6 expresses a heartfelt plea, “Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee?” True revival is not something that can be manufactured or orchestrated by human effort; it is a sovereign move of God that brings about deep repentance, renewed passion for holiness, and a powerful outpouring of the Holy Spirit. It is characterized by a return to fervent prayer, a hunger for God’s word, and a   sense of God’s presence.

Throughout scripture, we see examples of God bringing revival in response to the earnest prayers of His people. In 1 Kings 18, God sent fire down from heaven in response to Elijah’s prayer, demonstrating His power and turning the hearts of the people back to Him. In Ezekiel 37, God raised dry bones to life, symbolizing the revival of a spiritually dead nation. These accounts remind us that revival is a supernatural act of God, breathing new life into His people and igniting a passion for His glory. As we cry out for revival today, we must recognize our dependence on God’s supernatural intervention and seek Him with all our hearts.

The Second Coming Will Be a Supernatural Coming

The second coming of Jesus is the ultimate supernatural event that believers eagerly anticipate. Acts 1:11 records the angels’ promise to the disciples, “This same Jesus, which is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye have seen him go into heaven.” The return of Jesus will be a visible, glorious event that will transcend all natural laws. Jesus will appear in the clouds with power and great glory, and the dead in Christ will rise first, followed by those who are alive and remain, who will be caught up to meet the Lord in the air (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17).

This supernatural coming of Jesus signifies the culmination of God’s redemptive plan and the fulfillment of His promises. It will be a time of great rejoicing for believers, as we will be reunited with our Savior and experience the fullness of His kingdom. The anticipation of Jesus’ return motivates us to live lives of holiness, vigilance, and faithfulness, knowing that our redemption draws near. As we wait for this glorious event, we are reminded to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus, our blessed hope, and to be steadfast in our faith, knowing that His coming is certain and imminent.
