As the Day Begins

Matthew 10:32-39 (NIV) “Whoever acknowledges me before others, I will also acknowledge before my Father in heaven. But whoever disowns me before others, I will disown before my Father in heaven. Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I did not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to turn ‘a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law— a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.’ Anyone who loves their father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; anyone who loves their son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. Whoever does not take up their cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life for my sake will find it.”

In the quiet of the morning, as the world stirs awake, let us contemplate these words of Jesus from the Gospel of Matthew. To acknowledge Christ before others is not merely an outward declaration but a reflection of the inner commitment of our hearts. It is to align our lives with His teachings and to walk in His ways. Yet, in doing so, we must be prepared for the conflicts that may arise, for following Christ often challenges the status quo and disrupts earthly peace. Jesus speaks of a division, not of His making, but of the response to His message—a division that penetrates even the closest of human relationships.

As we meditate on these verses, let us reflect on the cost of discipleship. Jesus calls us to a radical love that surpasses even the deepest familial bonds. He beckons us to take up our cross, to embrace sacrifice for the sake of His kingdom. It is in losing our lives—our selfish desires, our worldly ambitions—that we truly find the abundant life He promises. May this truth resonate deeply within us, shaping our priorities and igniting a fervent devotion to Christ above all else. Let us pray, seeking strength and grace to walk this path of discipleship with unwavering faith and commitment.

Heavenly Father, Creator of all things, grant me the courage to boldly acknowledge Your Son, Jesus Christ, before others. Help me to live a life that reflects His love and truth, even in the face of opposition. Strengthen my resolve to follow Him wholeheartedly, regardless of the conflicts that may arise.

Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior of the world, teach me to prioritize You above all earthly relationships and attachments. May Your words dwell richly in my heart, guiding my thoughts, words, and actions each day. Empower me to take up my cross and follow You faithfully, trusting in Your unfailing love and grace.

Holy Spirit, Divine Comforter and Counselor, abide with me always, illuminating the path of discipleship and empowering me to live a life of sacrificial love. Fill me with Your wisdom and power, that I may bear witness to the truth of Christ with boldness and humility.

As we embark on this journey of discipleship, let us remember that our allegiance to Christ may bring division in the world but unites us in Him. Let us embrace the cross, knowing that in losing our lives for His sake, we find true abundance and eternal significance. Amen.
