As the Day Ends

Choosing the Better Part

“As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made. She came to him and asked, ‘Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!’ ‘Martha, Martha,’ the Lord answered, ‘you are worried and upset about many things, but few things are needed—or indeed only one. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.’” (Luke 10:38-42, NIV)

As you prepare to rest this evening, let’s reflect on the story of Martha and Mary. This passage invites us into the home of these two sisters and into a moment of deep spiritual significance. Martha, caught up in the busyness of hosting, becomes frustrated as her sister Mary sits at Jesus’ feet, absorbing His words. Jesus gently addresses Martha’s anxiety, reminding her that Mary has chosen the better part by prioritizing His presence over the demands of service. This story speaks to our own lives, often filled with the hustle and bustle of daily tasks. We, like Martha, can become distracted and anxious, missing the opportunity to simply be with Jesus. This evening, contemplate the invitation to slow down, to sit at His feet, and to find peace and nourishment in His presence.

Mary’s choice to sit at Jesus’ feet is a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritizing our relationship with Him. In the quiet moments before sleep, consider the many demands that pull you in different directions throughout the day. Reflect on how often these distractions keep you from experiencing the peace that comes from being close to Jesus. As you meditate on this scripture, allow yourself to feel the warmth and security of His presence, knowing that He values your company and longs for you to choose the better part. This time of reflection can transform your evenings into moments of spiritual renewal, providing rest for your soul and deepening your connection with God.

Prayer

Heavenly Father,
I come before You tonight with a heart full of gratitude for Your unfailing love and constant presence in my life. As I reflect on the story of Martha and Mary, I see myself in Martha’s busyness and distractions. Father, forgive me for the times I have allowed the cares of this world to overshadow my time with You. Help me to remember that few things are needed, or indeed only one—Your presence. Teach me to seek You first, to prioritize my relationship with You above all else. Just as You gently reminded Martha, remind me to choose what is better. Let this evening be a time of rest in Your loving arms, where I can find peace and comfort knowing that I am cherished by You. Fill my heart with Your tranquility and help me to carry this peace into each day, always placing You at the center of my life.

Lord Jesus,
As I meditate on Your interaction with Martha and Mary, I am struck by Your compassion and wisdom. You understand my struggles and anxieties, and You call me to a place of rest at Your feet. Tonight, I choose to let go of my worries and to focus on You. Thank You for being the source of true peace and fulfillment. Help me to emulate Mary’s example, to listen intently to Your words and to cherish the time spent in Your presence. Lord, guide me in balancing the demands of life with the necessity of spiritual intimacy with You. May my life be a reflection of Your love and grace, drawing others to find their rest in You as well. Let Your words sink deeply into my heart, transforming my thoughts and actions to align with Your will. In the quiet of this night, speak to me, Lord, and let me rest in Your wisdom and love.

Holy Spirit,
I invite You to move within me as I settle down for the night. Illuminate my mind with the truth of Your word and fill my heart with a deep sense of Your presence. Help me to be sensitive to Your guidance and to cultivate a habit of listening to Your voice amidst the noise of everyday life. Just as Mary sat at Jesus’ feet, teach me to prioritize moments of stillness and reflection, where I can hear Your gentle whispers. Holy Spirit, empower me to let go of distractions and to focus on what truly matters. Let Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guard my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. As I sleep, may my dreams be filled with visions of Your love and guidance, preparing me for a new day of walking in Your ways. Thank You for Your continual presence and for the work You are doing in my life, drawing me closer to the heart of God.

Thought for the Night

As you lay down to rest, remember the words of Jesus: “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” Let this be a reminder that time spent in the presence of God is never wasted. Embrace the peace and security of being close to Jesus and allow this assurance to bring you a restful night’s sleep. Rest in the knowledge that you are cherished by God and that His presence is with you always, providing comfort and strength for each new day.
